Would you like to take part in Wolverhampton’s first Young Author Competition?

What is it?

Young Authors is a short story writing competition for Key Stage 2 & 3 pupils in Wolverhampton, culminating in an awards ceremony at the Wolverhampton Literature Festival (WLF) 2018.

The competition is completely free to enter.

Deadline for submissions is midnight on Friday 8th December, 2017.

Page to Stage:

The winning stories will be turned into short plays and performed at the WLF festival, and all shortlisted stories will be printed into a printed anthology, available free of charge to all pupils with a story included.

The Stories:

Pupils are invited to submit a short story of roughly 500 words on the theme of “Travel”.  This theme can be interpreted in any way.  They may choose to focus on real-world experiences, countries and travel, or perhaps explore travel in a more creative way looking at space, time-travel, alternative realities or even magical worlds.  The choice really is up to your pupils.

The Judging:

They will then be judged by our specially selected panel of judges including representatives from The Imaginarium, Wolverhampton City Council, Wolverhampton Library, City of Wolverhampton College, The Express and Star, and award winning local author, Paul Dowswell.

The Winners:

There will be two judging categories – Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.  Ten finalists from each category will be chosen.  All of these finalist stories will be compiled into a printed anthology.  From that pool of 20 finalists, four overall winners will be chosen – 2 from each category.

The Prizes:

* All pupils who submit a story to the competition will receive a certificate of participation.

* All pupils selected as finalists will receive a copy of the printed collection of stories, including their own story.

* The four winning entries will also see their story brought to life on the stage by City of Wolverhampton College Performing Arts students.  These plays will be performed at the Wolverhampton Literature Festival, 2018.

The Awards:

The Awards Ceremony will take place at 2pm on Saturday 27th January, 2018 at The Slade Rooms, Broad Street, Wolverhampton.  Tickets will be free and available from the WLF box office (details to follow).
