Nurse Brown from Jamaica was painted in 1956 by a white Birmingham-based artist, Irene Welburn. The portrait's young black subject may be the painter's friend. We don't know. There's a lot we don't really know: Is she still alive? Where did she work? Is the gesture she is so clearly making, a Rastafarian symbol?

Jefny Ashcroft, a Wolverhampton writer, feels this picture deserves to be better-known, especially now the Windrush generation's importance is finally being appreciated. She will be talking briefly about the little she knows and then asking listeners what they can tell us about this enigmatic work.
