The Living Memory Project records and celebrates life stories and personal photography collections from across the Black Country. Founded by artist and filmmaker Geoff Broadway, the project was developing in response to the shift in popular photography where the role of the family album and the personal collection has declined with the rise of the mobile phone and social media.
Come along and discuss our 500-page Living Memory Project book in more detail. We will be sharing some of the featured stories and photographs and talking about the wider changes in popular photography and storytelling. We will be joined by two project participants who will share their experiences of being involved in the project and the importance of the project.
This three-year project has recorded over 60 life stories, hosted over 120 community sharing sessions, pop up exhibitions, talks and creative workshops, and commissioned a series of new films and artist commissions.
The new Living Memory Project book is an extensive, 500-page full-colour publication that features beautifully reproduced photographs, personal life stories and a selection of new critical writing to help us think more deeply about photography and everyday life. The book features highlights from our community events, creative workshops, and public exhibitions, and includes work from our commissioned artists who have used sculpture, photography, film, creative writing and textiles to explore the project’s themes.
